What are Donut Doors?
Donut Doors are doors for off-road adventure vehicles that do not have a middle. Without a middle section, drivers can have the same wind-in-your-hair experience they love when driving without doors along with the added protection of having some hardware on the side of the vehicle. They were first introduced in a preview of the Ford Bronco, but they were never fully released for the vehicle. Now it looks like the Wrangler will be the first to sport Jeep donut doors.
What the Patent Tells Us
Filed by Jeep in 2017 and published in December 2021, the patent contains sketches that depict frameless doors that have a big hole in the middle — hence the donut-like look. The sketches are reminiscent of doors outfitted on the Switchback concept shown at the 2017 Easter Jeep Safari. Similar donut doors were shown on the Wrangler at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. Though Jeep said they were merely a prototype then, the newly released patent gives a strong indication that donut doors could come to the Wrangler very soon.
