Ram, Chevrolet, and Ford offer you some of the top trucks out there. How do these trucks compare in towing? Let’s take a closer look below.
Car and Driver recently did a test of towing with the diesel engines in the Ram 1500, Chevy 1500, and Ford F-150. They did this test to see how an everyday, not a specific work truck, can handle the towing. They found the Ram 1500 to be the winner.
Car and Driver describes the towing test, “But while this truck [Silverado], equipped with the Duramax and the Z71 off-road package, rides better than other current-gen Silverados we’ve tested, it is no match for the Ram’s supple ride and adept handling. The scary thing for the competition is that the Ram isn’t just good for a truck; it’s just plain good. The F-150, on the other hand, never settles down. It bucks, wiggles, shimmies, and hops endlessly after an otherwise minor bump in the road.”
While you might not get the highest numbers for towing capacity or hauling loads, Car and Driver tells us that the Ram 1500 just performs better. It feels good out on the road with plenty of power and great handling. This truck can handle hard work and heavy loads and it does a good job with daily driving.
Let’s take a closer look at the options you have in terms of performance and engines for the Ram 1500. In the test above, the Ram was equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine. This engine gives you 260-horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. The other engine options include a 3.5-liter V6 engine that gives you 305-horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, and two V8 engine options. The V8 engine options are both 5.7-liter V8 engines that give 395-horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque, but the second 5.7-liter V8 has an eTorque mild-hybrid feature that gives you more torque.
